New Year, New you?

HAPPY 2020 FELLOW HUMANS (and pets)!!

The title of this blog is but a cliché. However, it is an attempt to remind us that we are the captains of our destiny. We have the power to change ourselves, if we so choose. The beginning of a new year often encourages us to set goals and strive to be better. Out with the old, in with the new!!

A recent client told me about a podcast that Eckhart Tolle and Oprah did a while back on his book, “A New Earth: Awakening To Your Life’s Purpose”. There are 10 episodes, each on a chapter. It was a nice way to reconnect and be reminded of things that I already sense yet need to practice. I like this quote, “Awareness is the greatest agent for change.” I am forever reminding clients of this. We all know this!

Rolfing asks this of us.; to notice change, to pay attention. Sometimes that change is subtle. Sometimes there are aha moments. We are all works in progress and there need not be an agenda, but simply a willingness to explore possibilities and be curious. Humans are complicated creatures. I have often considered working with animals instead. I have “Rolfed” my dogs and they seem to enjoy it. I know a couple horse “Rolfers” (I put Rolf in quotes because it’s not something taught at the Institute but it is fascial work and not rocket science). But then, I do like people and the challenges that come with them.

As we move into a new year, a new decade, and times are seemingly uncertain, I’m reminded of something said to me in my Phase I at the Rolf Institute when I entered into this work- “You have to be comfortable with not knowing”. I was then and still am.

I listened to a short talk on YouTube this morning with Eckhart Tolle that added a new layer to this idea. He too said it was important to be okay with not knowing. He pointed out that , when we remain present and in the moment, rather than being in the “thinking” mind we connect to that deeper conscious self that isn’t ruled by the ego. This is where I feel true healing can take place.

In my decade+ with this work I have been comfortable with not knowing. Staying curious and open. I am a facilitator, a conduit through which people can allow change. As one of my favorite yoga teachers says, “Be ready for change for when change finds you.” for it will.

I wish us all to find healing on whatever level, however, wherever and whenever. Take care of yourself.

And, pray for snow!
